Film Reviews: Earth Day (2009) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 23:16:47 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

It seems that these days people are afraid to speak their mind in any way. If you make the wrong joke, you might find yourself sitting in your company's HR office getting a lecture about sensitivity and synergy. So, I have to admire anyone who takes these things and thumbs their noses at them, and that's exactly what the brave people over at Faux Show Productions have done with their new horror/comedy, Earth Day.

The story begins with a sort-of hippie sit in, with four people planting a tree in memory of a lost loved one, but the real fun comes when the group breaks up and one of them heads through the woods toward home. He's surprised in the woods by some sort of nature freak and killed in a most heinous way! When the police arrive, their only suspect is the person who discovered the body, Hassan (played wit tongue firmly in cheek by Adrian Salge), Hassan is your stereotypical Pakistani, complete with cheesy accent and everything. Except that Hassan only wants to make natural hair care products. As the story unfolds, Hassan finds another body and begins to feel that if he doesn't figure out who the killer is, he'll be the one who takes the fall for it. In the end, when the killer is revealed, you'll find yourself both surprised and laughing at the same time!

Earth Day takes all the normal horror conventions and uses them in a great way, while taking the time to mock all the typical 'hippie' traditions too! No one is left unmocked here, both the 'establishment' and the 'people' come under fire for being too full of themselves and narrow-minded. It really does my heart good to know that I'm not the last one out there who thinks that if it's funny, it's funny, and if you get your feelings hurt, then you might want to check your sense of humor. I'm giving Earth Day three out of four cigars, it's not perfect, but it's a great effort. I can't wait to see what Faux Show sends my way next! You can find out more about Earth Day by heading over to the Faux Show Productions MySpace page.
