Film Reviews: Goth Kill (2009) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 23:19:50 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

When the movie Goth Kill first crossed my desk, I have to admit to being less than excited. I had a vision of a bunch of goth kids, all dressed in black and moping around talking about death and darkness and all the stereotypical stuff that you imagine goes with the 'goth' lifestyle. Well, I have to bow my head to writer/director JJ Connelly, what he's put together is a great horror movie with occult overtones.

The tale here is of former priest Nicholas Dread (played by Flambeaux), Dread is a priest during the Inquisition, who discovers that the church is using the Inquisition to line its own pockets by forcing confessions they know to be false. When he confronts he superiors, Dread is burned at the stake with two women who he's forced confessions out of. While burning, Dread renounces God and makes a deal with Satan to have his own kingdom. Now, we find Dread collecting the last of the hundred thousand souls he needs to begin his reign, the only thing stopping him is, he needs to be dead, which isn't a problem since he's on death row. When the final incantation is complete, it's only a matter of finding him a new body, but, when an accident happens, Dread finds himself in the body of a virgin, but still filled with the same hatred for posers and hypocrites. Dread begins purging his surroundings of these people in the most brutal ways!

Goth Kill isn't at all what I expected, it's a great story with good acting and a very cool story. And, while jumping around in time would usually present a problem to any low budget filmmaker, Connelly does it with amazing skill, never once do you feel any 'fakeness' in the medieval scenes, and the real star of the show is Flambeaux as Dread, from the Scottish brogue through the attitude, Flambeaux is perfect as Dread. I'm giving Goth Kill four out of four cigars, if you (like me) would avoid this one because of the implications that come with the 'goth' in the title, drop those inhibitions and grab this movie! You can get a copy for yourself by heading over to Wild Eye Releasing's Goth Kill web page.
