Film Reviews: Reboot (2012) - By Misty Layne
Posted on Thursday, January 03, 2013 @ 00:50:52 Mountain Standard Time by Duane

Set within a dystopian world that is a collision between technology and humanity, REBOOT touches upon many of the current social and political concerns that arise from becoming more and more intertwined with the virtual. In contemporary Los Angeles, a young female hacker (Stat) awakens from unconsciousness to find an iPhone glued to her hand and a mysterious countdown ticking away on the display. Suffering from head trauma, and with little recollection of who she is or what is happening, Stat races against time to figure out what the code means, and what unknown event the pending zero-hour will bring.

I’ve seen quite a bit of cyberpunk dystopian lately but I have to admit that REBOOT may be my favorite one to date. It’s a short film so the story ends well before I’d like it to so I’d love to see how a fuller version would play out. The main focus here is on Stat, the female hacker who awakens with an iPhone glued to her hand (and really just think about the amount of symbolism in that one small thing – of having the iPhone literally glued to her hand) who with the help of two co-workers must figure out just what the hell is going on. A bit reminiscent of RUN, LOLA, RUN (especially with Stat reminding me of Lola herself), REBOOT is a taut race against time full of twists and turns as the clock counts down to…well, we’re not sure what exactly.

I love Emily Somers, who plays Stat. She’s got that young Angelina Jolie waif-like thing down pat. Also as Stat, while she is concerned about the situation she’s found herself in, she never once acts like it’s really that big a deal – female characters who can take care of themselves? Always refreshing.

This is yet another film I really can’t say a lot of bad about – my only complaint is that it ended too soon for me but such is the way of short films so I highly suggest you check it out. And while you’re at it, you might want to check out REBOOT’S ARG campaign that’s part of their marketing platform – they’ve got people playing in 135 countries thus far and seriously it’s pretty uber-cool. You can check it out here.

If you want to learn more about REBOOT itself, check out their site or follow them on Facebook or Twitter!
