What happens when an atheist walks in front of traffic, and suddenly finds himself face-to-face with the God he doesn’t think exists?
In Court Street Productions’ new web series, The Book of Dallas, Dallas McKay reacts the same way anyone else would: he swears. Profusely. Then, he resigns himself to his fate.
Fortunately for Dallas, God isn’t angry, instead noting that, “I have terrible spokespeople – you’re probably better off if you don’t believe. Makes you a better person.” So instead of eternal damnation, Dallas’ disbelief yields a mission: return to Earth and write a new Bible - something that takes out all of the hatred and intolerance, and ends the violence and bigotry that happens in God’s name. Then, take it on a book tour and sell it to the world.
So begins The Book of Dallas, a 10-episode satire written by Joe Atkinson (Reality) and produced by Atkinson, Jakob Bilinski (Shade of Gray, Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh) and Marx Hernandez Pyle (Silence of the Belle, Reality on Demand). The series, which is currently in production in and around Evansville, Ind., follows Dallas through his book tour as he faces down protesters, religious leaders and even his own followers in an effort to find common ground among the world’s major religions.
“The Book of Dallas was written out of my own struggles to come to terms with religion,” Atkinson said. “The story has gone through several iterations over the last five or six years, but ultimately, the central theme always remained the same: the idea that God saw all of these things that were being done in His name, and was pretty pissed off about it.”
The series stars Benjamin Crockett (Reality on Demand) as Dallas, and Clay Evans (Fathers: The Movie) and Jeanne Whitney as his best friend, Hank Jackson, and girlfriend, Lindsey DuPree, respectively. Other key roles include Kevin Roach (Reality on Demand, Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh) as a loner touched by Dallas’ message; Rusty James (Wireface: In the Beginning, Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh) as a disbelieving evangelical preacher; and Julie Hernandez Seaton (Reality on Demand, The Lynneville Incident) as the publisher who opts to take a chance on Dallas’s book.
The series also features special appearances by Grant Niezgodski (Reality), Sarah Moore (Gamer Chick), and Louie Lawless (My Bloody Wedding, Video Stop).
Filming for The Book of Dallas began April 21 and will run through July 1. The series is expected to premiere online in mid-September.
